Scaling and computation of smooth atmospheric motions

چکیده

We introduce a general scaling of the inviscid Eulerian equations which is satisfied by all members of the set of adiabatic smooth stratified atmospheric motions. Then we categorize the members into mutually exclusive subsets. By applying the bounded derivative principle to each of the subsets, we determine the specific scaling satisfied by that subset. One subset is midlatitude motion which is hydrostatic and has equal horizontal length scales. Traditionally, the primitive equations have been used to describe these motions. However it is well known that the use of the primitive equations for a limited area forecast of these motions leads to an ill-posed initial-boundary value problem. We introduce an alternate system which accurately describes this type of motion and can be used to form a well-posed initid-boundary value problem. We prove that the new system can also be used for any adiabatic or diabatic smooth stratified flow. Finally, we present supporting numerical results.

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods

Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...

Wavelet-based Analysis for Pulse Period of Earthquake Ground-motions

Pulse period of earthquake records has been known as a key parameter in seismology and earthquake engineering. This paper presents a detailed characterization of this parameter for a special class of earthquake records called pulse-like ground motions. This type of motions often resulting from directivity effects is characterized by a strong pulse in the velocity time history of motion, in norm...

A formulation of convective entrainment in terms of mixing efficiency

The entrainment across a stably stratified interface forced by convective motions is discussed in the light of the mixing efficiency of the entrainment process. The context is the convectively driven atmospheric boundary layer and we focus on the regime of equilibrium entrainment, i.e. when the boundary-layer evolution is in a quasi-steady state. The entrainment law is classically based on the ...

Intensity of convective motions in marine atmospheric boundary layer retrieved from ocean surface radar imagery

The paper focuses on the occurrence and development of coherent structures observed in the atmosphere above ocean under natural conditions. Microwave imaging radars are suggested as data take instruments. The phenomena of marine atmospheric cells and rolls onset, horizontal planform, aspect ratio and scaling phenomena are examined. Convective patterns manifested in radar images and information ...

Composite quadrature formulae for the approximation of wavelet coefficients of piecewise smooth and singular functions

The computation of wavelet coefficients of a function typically requires the computation of a large number of integrals. These integrals represent the inner product of that function with a wavelet function on different scales, or with the corresponding scaling function on a fine scale. We develop quadrature rules for those integrals that converge fast for piecewise smooth and singular functions...
